Tinga Stewart



Tinga Stewart -born Neville Stewart in 1959 Kingston, Jamaica- legendary Reggae Artist, began his musical career in the late sixties. This multitalented, versatile entertainer with a unique lover's style sensual voice recorder his first song "She's Gone" in 1969. Along with Ernest Wilson of the Clarendonians, the hit. "Hear That Train" produced by Derrick Harriot helped to secure Tinga a significant position early in the world of Reggae Music.

It was during this time in which Tinga was the lead vocalist for the group "Wildcats". Performing at some of the leading entertainment spots in Kingston, Jamaica (Sombrero Club, Flamingo Hotel, and the VIP Lounge), it was determined that Tinga was destined to make a worthy impact upon on the Reggae world. Teaming up with thelikes of "Fab Five" and "Byron Lee and the Dragonaires", Tinga Stewart tirelessly entertained in and around schools as well as numerous local functions in his beautiful homeland, Jamaica.

In 1971, he joined the "Boris Gardner Happening Band" as the lead vocalist. The band successfully toured the entire island as well as many other Caribbean islands mainly on the Hotel/Tourism circuit.

Tinga Stewart went solo in 1973, scoring his first big hit, "Funny Feeling", produced by Lloyd Campbell. His success continued, with the 1974 winning Festival song, "Play De Music", written by Ernie Smith. With confidence, experience, and a well established career, Tinga, wrote the following year's Festival song, "Hooray Festival sung by his talented brother Roman Stewart. With this degree of success behind him, Tinga, turned his energies back into the hostel circuit by teaming up with Leslie Butler's one man band, where he continued to develop his very popular, personable musical style through 1980.

1981 was a very big year for Tinga Stewart, as he was voted the most popular Artist in Jamaica. Tinga sang one of Jamaica's most popular Festival songs to date, written by Sangie Davis and produced by Rita Marley. The track titled, "Nuh Weh Nuh Betts Dan Yard" catapulted this very popular Artist into the international spotlight where the world audience began increasingly enjoy this gifted artist.

Now a seasoned performer, he began to focus more on studio work with modest success. He completed two albums on John Carroll's Calabash label, "Key to Your Heart" and "I Feel the Music". Having already made his mark on both the Jamaican and international reggae world, he decided to further his career by teaming up with and adding his "Tinga" style flair to dance hall hits. Tinga has done the most combination hits with popular DJ's such as Tiger, Ninjaman, Toney Rebel, Capelton, Nardo Ranks, Simpleton, and Powerman to name a few. In 1988, "Take Time to Know Her" went, number one on all charts all over the World, sealing his fate as a successful and true pioneer of reggae music. The Ninjaman combination struck, gold again as "Cover Me", "Save the Last Dance" and "Sukie, Sukie" topped the charts shortly after. The "Upon the Roof" song venture with Tiger achieved hit status as well.

Once again in 1994, he toppled the charts again with Willie Lindo penned song, the lovely, "Inside My Heart".
During 1998, Tinga Stewart rode the charts once again with "Whiter Shade of Pale" and "After All is Said and Done".

To date Tinga's career boasts 10 albums and over 200 singles along with an impressive longevity and impeccable reputation of talent and professionalism.
His most recent album, "Unforgettable" released in August 2000 has received positive endorsement from his musical peers and has proven to be well received by both fans in Jamaica and internationally. His latest single, "Let the Music Play" is currently creating waves in England.
His international tour line up includes Japan, Canada, North America and the Caribbean. Tinga frequently entertains in Jamaica and the United States.
Tinga, is currently touring with his ever popular contemporaries, Freddie McGregor, Glen Washington, and Mikey Spice on the "Cancer Bashment Tour" international tour ending in Africa in 2001.
Along with his signature stage performance, creative style, and love for music, Tinga continues to have a positive, international influence upon the world of Reggae Music well into the millennium.
