Hawkeye

If one was asked to describe this individual we are sure that the words "charismatic" "charming" "humble" and last but not least "mannerly" would come to one's mind.

Of course we are talking about one of our most lyrical and original DJ's in Jamaica. In the dance hall fraternity he is known as the one and only "HAWKEYE", born Christopher Smith in 1971 of parents Lillian and Derrick Smith. He is the fourth child of four sisters and two brothers. As a child he always loved music but of course the parents thought that career move would get him nowhere so it was "hell and powder house" in that household.

He graduated from High school where he did tracks and Home Economics. He worked at Morgan's Habour for a while then he left for greener pastures and went to Sutton Place Hotel he was there for awhile but still his heart was with his number one love, music. He still could not have made that career move with his parents on his back so he decided to stick to cooking for a couple more years, thats when he went to the Pegasus Hotel.

After spending some time at that hotel and wasn't getting the satisfaction he wanted he decided to make that move come what may, and he did. From then on he has been doing what he does best. A former Chef by profession, he gave up preparing mouth watering and delectable dishes for the love of music, which he has no regrets making, some thirteen (13) years later.

His first venture into a recording studio resulted in a song called "Patios" which was produced by John Mills in 1988. The response to this song gave him the encouragement to continue in his pursuit of a place among the top toasters in the island.

He made an impression, and, was introduced by a friend to Danny Browne the founder of Main Street Records. Hawkeye recorded "Advertise yuh bran" which enjoyed some success, but it was that tremendous effort that he made in `1997 with the chart entering "Arrest mi officer" that he did for Mr. Browne (Main Street Label) that flung the doors open for him.

He then followed with "Beg fi im" which made it to the top ten. Finally his dream came true, he made it to the number one spot in all the local tabloids with the very catchy and amusing "Ooh ah aah". He then teamed up with Lady G to deliver "Man a bad man" which got a fair amount of air play. Then along came the ever popular "Move", all these were done while still at Main Street. The public embraced him, and Hawkeye the toaster whose hypnotic growls and utterings that made him a household name in Jamaica, the Caribbean and the UK was on his way.

In the late 90's Hawkeye was faced with a major decision as Mr. Browne was now a Christian and started to produce gospel. He had to find a home (musically speaking), where he would be comfortable. He settled at "In the Streets Records" owned and operated by Byron Murray. Since joining the "In The Street" label, he has scored some of his more prolific hits "Reality thing" (inspired by the American Rapper Q-Tip) a hit in the United Kingdom, "Go Rachel", "Just like we", "Yuh nuh beg" and "Money making guy" have been flowing like fine wine.

Dj Hawkeye has not stopped since, he is now in full flight and the year 2001 had started with a bang. He has been in high demand for shows overseas and Jamaica alike, he has also been dominating the airwaves with songs such as "Twingy twanga", "Wha happen mum", "Nah do right", "Hold up yuh han", "Senorita" to name a few. In mid 2001 he did his first hip hop recording with Phife Dawg of a Tribe Called Quest titled "Diggy Dialect".

Hawkeye has now parted company with "In the Streets" and has formed his own company "Twingy Twanga Production". In 2002 Hawkeye has released his debut album which is titled "Bubble & Wine". This CD is comprised of 18 tracks. The title track which is on the dwali rythm is doing very well in the Caribbean, U.K., America and Jamaica. The entrepreneur is the Executive Producer and his company does the distribution.
